Executive Search - Headhunting has come of age
Originally conceived as a way of winkling out very successful people who are not on the market, Executive search was seen as a methodology reserved for recruiting members of the board. Specialized boutique search firms however are now delivering real business advantage to enlightened firms right across the employment spectrum.
Are you busy?
You probably are. A high performing professional working effectively and successfully in a project environment will be busy.
Unfortunately for potential employers this also means that you’re probably too busy to browse the recruitment pages, update your CV and apply for jobs that you’d be perfect for.
People who habitually browse the recruitment pages and apply to job adverts usually fall into three categories. They are unemployed, unhappy or underachieving in their current role. There are of course other reasons why candidates may apply for an advertised job, however the challenge for the employer is to separate the high performers from the unhappy underachievers during a relatively brief interview process.
One of the first and most important risks to mitigate in any high value project is whom you chose to run it. A decision that will undoubtedly determine the projects success or failure and will probably contribute to the firms overall profit and loss for that financial year. By understanding their clients’ space and by using a mixture of networking, referral and research, headhunters are able to proactively contact those busy, results oriented and hard to find candidates that can make a difference.
Employers who restrict themselves to using advertising based recruitment agencies rather than executive search firms, also restrict themselves to recruiting the best candidates on the market rather than the best candidates in the market.
Are you happy?
It is natural as an employee for loyalty to our employers to be at its highest when things are going well and to start considering a career change when things look bleak. Unfortunately this mind-set has the potential to be very damaging to your career and your ability to achieve progression in salary and responsibility.
The worst time to attend an interview is when you are despondent de-motivated and desperate. Conversely the best time to leverage your career is on the back of proven recent success. By making the right moves at the right time you can experience career growth many times faster than your current career trajectory.
Get yourself noticed
A search consultant’s brief is to find the best possible person for the job not just the best person on a database. Quite often these people are highly qualified subject matter experts, award winners or simply well known within their chosen sectors or companies as being extraordinary high performers. To raise your profile - write articles, network and deliver great results and before long you may get an unexpected call.
